The Cold Open Comeback

Cold opens are back. With more podcasts competing for ears, the first 15 seconds have become prime real estate. Listeners decide whether to stick around fast—sometimes before the theme music even hits.

That’s why smart producers are bringing back the cold open. And doing it well.

Here’s what works:

Start with the best tape. A quote. A moment. A twist. Something that says: “You’re going to want to hear this.”

Keep it short. 20 seconds max. A little mystery is great—too much rambling and you’ve lost them.

Then pay it off. Your intro music or host setup should tie the teaser back to the full story. Cold opens aren’t stand-alone. They’re bait and bridge.

Done right, a cold open gives your show an energy boost—and tells listeners they’re in good hands.
